75 years of history
A man ahead of his time!
Through his enterprise and capacity for innovation, António João Eusébio created a small company in 1945 that became the biggest non-alcoholic drinks group in Portugal years later.
After the acquisition of COMPAL in 2009, the SUMOL+COMPAL merger created a clear leader in the Portuguese non-alcoholic drinks markets with a major international presence.
We are proud of our past and regard the future with great optimism and enthusiasm. We were founded in Portugal, but we have an international outlook. We develop our own brands and also represent 3rd-party brands. We are inspired by nature and all the good things it can give us and we strive every day to build new and different products for our consumers around the world.

Our Board of Directors

He joined Grupo Sumol in 1989 as a deputy manager at Refrigor (the holding company) and later held various senior management positions in the Group’s companies, becoming Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sumolis in April 2000. In December 2008, during the merger of Sumolis and Compal, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL.
He is currently also Chairman of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL Marcas.
He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) and a master’s degree in business administration from Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL). He later took a postgraduate diploma at the Instituto para o Desenvolvimento da Gestão Empresarial, Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (INDEG/ISCTE) and UCP in business management, information management and taxation. He also studied advanced training in leadership (Harvard Kennedy School of Government), management (Kellogg Business School – Northwestern University/UCP) and corporate governance for non-executive directors (Instituto Português de Corporate Governance).

Born in Torres Novas in 1965, he is married and father of two girls and one boy. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Universidade Católica Portuguesa (1983-1988), an MBA in international management from the same university (1992-1994) and a postgraduate diploma in business management from INDEG/ISCTE (2004-2005).
Since 2009, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL and, since the same year, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SUMOL+COMPAL Marcas, the group’s operating company. He previously held various senior management positions at several Grupo Sumol companies (1999-2008). Prior to that, he was Financial and Administrative Director at Compaq Computer Portugal (1997-1999) and Digital Equipment Portugal (1996-1997), and Finance Manager at Pepsi-Cola International (1994-1996).

He joined Grupo Sumol in 1979, after a 6-month internship, to work in the manufacturing department. He later held various senior management positions in the group’s companies, amongst which Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cibal SA, Sumolis Gestão de Marcas SA and Sasel SA. Since 2009, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL.
He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (1973-1978) and a postgraduate diploma in management from Instituto para o Desenvolvimento da Gestão Empresarial, Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (INDEG/ISCTE) (2004-2005).

In 1987, she began working at Grupo Sumol in quality control, later taking up the position of management advisor at Refrigor (the holding company). She later held various senior management positions in Grupo Sumol companies, with responsibility for quality control, R&D, marketing and brand management. Amongst other positions, she was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of Refrigor in 2012 and non-executive director of SUMOL+COMPAL.
She has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (1981-1986) and a master’s degree in marketing (INDEG/ISCTE). She complemented her professional training by taking a course in general management (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), the Advanced Marketing Programme for Executives (Universidade Católica Portuguesa) and a postgraduate diploma in business management at the Instituto para o Desenvolvimento da Gestão Empresarial, Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (INDEG/ISCTE).

Joined the finance department of the holding company (REFRIGOR) of Grupo SUMOL in 1986. Became chief administrative and financial officer at SUMOLIS in 1990 and was voted on to the board in 1998. Chairman of the Board of SASEL and CEREURO, companies responsible at the time for the water and beer businesses, respectively, in 2000–2005. Stepped down from the SUMOL+COMPAL board in 2014 to work on the group’s international expansion plans. As a result, was Chairman of the Board of SUMOL+COMPAL Mozambique in 2012–2014 and is managing director of SUMOL+COMPAL Angola since 2014. Rejoined the Board of SUMOL+COMPAL in 2020.
Vice-chairman of PROBEB – Associação Portuguesa das Bebidas Refrescantes não Alcoólicas and a director of Águas Minerais e de Nascente de Portugal.
A graduate of economics from the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão – ISEG (1980–1985); Post-graduate studies in financial analysis from Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão – ISEG (1994). He is an accredited financial analyst certified by the European Federation of Financial Analysts Societies (EFFAS).

He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration (1986-1991) from Universidade Católica Portuguesa, later taking a postgraduate course in business management from INDEG/ISCTE (2004/2005).
He held several positions in the sales department at Beiersdorf and joined Grupo Sumol in 1998, where he has held several senior positions (2003-2008) in management, sales and marketing. From 2009 to 2017, he was head of the Portuguese and Spanish Market Unit and, in April 2017, was appointed a member of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL.

He has a bachelor’s degree in law from the Faculty of Law, Universidade Lusíada (1982-1987).
After a period as an assistant lecturer at Universidade Lusíada (1987-2001), he held various senior management positions at several companies in what was then Grupo Sumol (1987-2008).
Since 2009, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL.

From 2007 to 2008, he was a director at Compal, where he has worked since 1992. Prior to that, he held several positions at various companies: Fernando Araújo Import & Export in Canada (1978-1980), Rima-Nixdorf (1980), Tabaqueira (1980-1983) and Right Step Group in Canada and the USA (1983-1990), and Right Step International in Spain (1990-1991).
He was a member of the Board of Directors at Sensafruit (2007-10), a joint venture between Compal and Grupo Osborne in the Spanish market. He graduated in business organisation and management from ISCTE U.N. in 1975, finished a degree in economics at Instituto Superior de Economia/Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1977 and took the advanced management programme for executives (PAGE) at Universidade Católica in 2000.
Since 2009, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL. He has chaired the Compal Fruitology Centre since its inception (2012) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Fruit Juice Association (AIJN) (2013-2017), chairing its Board of Directors since May 2017.

He has a bachelor’s degree in business organisation and management from Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) (1993-1997) and a postgraduate diploma in financial analysis from Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) (2001).
He joined Grupo Sumol in 1997 to work in the finance department. He later held various technical and management positions at several companies within the group, above all in the administrative and financial area, but also in sales and business. In 2009, he became financial director at SUMOL+COMPAL. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of SUMOL+COMPAL since April 2017.
